Buying car insurance for the first time is mostly answering questions. Knowing what each question means cuts the process in half and helps you avoid paying for things you don’t need. Here’s a 15-minute walkthrough from start to finish.

What You Need to Have Ready

Before you start a quote — online or by phone — pull together:

  • Your driver’s license number. The carrier verifies your driving record.
  • Your vehicle’s VIN. The 17-character Vehicle Identification Number is on the dashboard (driver’s side, visible through the windshield) or on your registration.
  • Your address. Insurance rates are tied to your zip code — where you park the car overnight, not where you work.
  • Any other drivers in your household. Everyone who lives with you and might drive the car needs to be listed, even if they have their own policy.
  • Lien holder info if you have a loan. If you financed the car, the lender requires comprehensive and collision coverage and needs to be listed on the policy.

The Eight Questions Every Quote Will Ask

You’ll answer variations of these no matter which carrier you use:

  1. What year/make/model? Some cars cost more to insure than others — sports cars, luxury vehicles, and models with expensive parts run higher.
  2. How do you use the car? Personal use (commuting to work or school), pleasure (occasional), or business. Most people choose personal commute.
  3. How many miles per year? Lower mileage often means lower rates. Give your honest estimate.
  4. How long have you been licensed? First-time buyers pay more because there’s no history. That improves quickly — often after 12–24 months.
  5. Any violations or accidents? Be honest. They pull your motor vehicle report anyway.
  6. What coverage do you want? More on this below.
  7. What deductible? A deductible is what you pay out of pocket before insurance covers the rest. Higher deductible = lower monthly premium.
  8. Do you own or rent your home? Bundling renters or homeowners insurance with the same company usually saves 5–15%.

How to Read the Price You’re Given

A quote breaks down by coverage type. Here’s what you’ll see:

  • Bodily injury liability (BI): Pays for injuries to other people if you cause an accident. Listed as two numbers — per person / per accident (e.g., 50/100 means $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident).
  • Property damage liability (PD): Pays for damage to other people’s property — cars, fences, mailboxes.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM): Protects you if someone hits you and they have no insurance or not enough. This is one of the best values in insurance. Don’t drop it to save $8/month.
  • Comprehensive: Covers non-collision damage — theft, hail, flood, hitting a deer. Required by lenders if you have a loan.
  • Collision: Covers damage to your car when you hit something. Also required by lenders.
  • Medical payments / PIP: Covers your medical costs regardless of fault. Required in no-fault states.

Common Upsells to Skip (at First)

Carriers often pitch add-ons at checkout. A few to think twice about:

  • Roadside assistance markup: Often $10–$20/month through the insurer. AAA or your credit card may already cover this cheaper.
  • Rental reimbursement: Useful if you drive daily and have no backup. Skip if you have another vehicle or can work around it.
  • Loan/lease gap insurance through the insurer: If you have a new-car loan, gap coverage is worth having — but your lender or a standalone policy is often cheaper than the insurer’s version.

A 15-Minute Checklist

  • Gather license, VIN, address, household drivers
  • Get quotes from at least two carriers (online takes 5–7 minutes each)
  • Compare the same coverage levels — not just the total price
  • Check UM/UIM is included
  • Ask about bundling discount if you rent an apartment
  • Set up autopay — many carriers give a 3–5% discount for it

Next step: Pull up your VIN from the dashboard and get your first quote — it takes about seven minutes online. Get a same-day quote that works for your situation →
